A quick Story

Headshot's: A Journey

Most people don't wake up excited to get their photo taken.

They book a headshot because something is shifting: a new job search, a promotion, a business launch, a rebrand, a return to the workforce, a big “okay… it’s time” moment.

And then the questions hit: “What do I wear?”

“What if I look awkward?”

“How do I make this look like me… but more polished?”

If that’s you, you’re in the right place.

I’m Heather Hathaway, a portrait photographer serving Palm Harbor and the greater Tampa Bay area, and I’ve coached all kinds of people through headshots—professionals who hate being photographed, entrepreneurs building a brand, and clients who just want to look confident and current online.

This is my complete 2026 headshot prep guide so you can show up relaxed, prepared, and camera-ready.

When Imane first contacted me, her intention was clear. She wanted to rebrand herself with some new professional and dynamic images that expressed her professionalism and dedication to the IT Software Industry.

Where to Start?

Start with the goal: Where will this headshot live?

Before you choose an outfit, decide what the photo needs to do for you.

A great headshot isn’t just “a nice picture.” It’s a trust-builder. It’s your first impression on screens you’ll never be in the room for.

Here are the most common goals I hear from clients booking professional headshots in Tampa Bay:

  • LinkedIn / corporate headshots: polished, clean, credible, approachable
  • Entrepreneur / personal brand: professional, but with personality and warmth
  • Actor/model: simple, natural, casting-friendly (depending on your type)

When you tell me where the image will be used (LinkedIn, website, speaking bio, press, business cards), I can guide:

  • background choice
  • lighting style
  • crop (tight vs. wider)
  • expression (friendly vs. authoritative vs. editorial)

Pro tip: If you’re unsure, bring 1–2 examples of headshots you like. Not to copy—just to clarify the vibe.

What to wear for headshots (simple rules that work)

Wardrobe is the fastest way to make your headshot look “expensive” and intentional—without being flashy.

Choose solid colors first

Solids photograph cleaner than busy patterns, and they keep the focus on your face.

Great go-to colors for headshots:

navy, charcoal, cream

jewel tones (emerald, sapphire)

soft blues and muted tones

Avoid if possible:

tiny stripes (they can create weird camera patterns)

loud logos

neon

heavy, chaotic prints

Pick necklines that flatter your face

What looks Good?

V-necks and open collars elongate and look modern

Crew necks can look great too—especially with a blazer or jacket

Layering = instant polish

A blazer, structured jacket, cardigan, or clean overshirt adds shape and makes you look more “finished” on camera.

If you’re debating, bring options. I’d rather you show up with 2–3 tops and we choose what photographs best than settle for something you don’t love.

Grooming + makeup: camera-friendly, not overdone

You don’t need glam. You need even, polished, and true to you.

Here’s what photographs best for LinkedIn headshots and corporate headshots:

Hair: style it like you would for an important meeting (not a casual errand)

Skin: moisturize; avoid trying new products the day before

Makeup: natural + even; matte finishes reduce shine

Facial hair: trim/shape the day before or the morning of

Glasses, jewelry, and accessories (what helps vs. distracts)

Glasses are totally fine. Clean the lenses and I’ll watch for reflections and angles.

Jewelry: keep it minimal unless it’s part of your brand identity

Avoid noisy accessories that pull attention away from your face (chunky bracelets, distracting smartwatches, etc.)

If something is meaningful to you and part of your story, we can absolutely include it—just intentionally.

What to bring to your headshot session

This is the “I’m so glad I brought that” list:

2–3 tops and/or a jacket

lint roller (I’ll have one too)

hair brush/comb + bobby pins

blotting papers or powder

water (hydration helps skin, posture, and energy)

If your session is for business branding, you can also bring a small prop that makes sense (laptop, notebook, tools of your trade)—but for classic headshots, simple usually wins.

“I don’t know how to pose.” Perfect. That’s my job.

This is the most common thing clients say before a session.

You don’t need to know how to pose. You just need to show up.

During your session, I’ll coach you through:

  • where to put your hands
  • how to angle your shoulders
  • how to tilt your chin for the best jawline
  • expressions that look confident (not forced)

My goal is for you to leave thinking:

“Oh… that wasn’t scary. And I actually look like myself.”
