My FIRST Institute Journey

When I first stepped into FIRST Institute in early 2023, I knew I was embarking on a transformative journey. The campus buzzed with creative energy, and I was immediately drawn to the state-of-the-art photography equipment and professional studio setups. The instructors brought real-world experience into every lesson, sharing not just technical knowledge but invaluable industry insights.
Learning and Growth
During my time at FIRST Institute, I immersed myself in every aspect of professional photography. From mastering studio lighting techniques to understanding the business side of the industry, each day brought new challenges and opportunities for growth. The hands-on approach to learning meant I wasn't just studying photography - I was living it.
Building a Foundation
The curriculum at FIRST Institute went beyond basic photography skills. We delved deep into advanced techniques, digital editing, client relations, and marketing strategies. These comprehensive lessons provided me with a solid foundation for launching my professional career.
Memorable Projects
One of the highlights of my education was participating in real-world projects. These assignments pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me develop my unique style. Working with actual clients while still under the guidance of experienced instructors was invaluable experience.
Graduation and Beyond
Graduating in September 2024 marked not just the end of my formal education but the beginning of my professional journey. The connections I made at FIRST Institute - both with instructors and fellow students - continue to be an important part of my professional network.
Impact on My Career
The skills and confidence I gained at FIRST Institute directly contributed to my early success in the industry. From landing my first wedding photography gig to joining the Tampa Area Professional Photographers Association board, my education provided the stepping stones I needed to establish myself in the competitive world of professional photography.
Looking back, choosing FIRST Institute was one of the best decisions I've made for my career. The comprehensive education, supportive environment, and practical experience set me up for success in ways I couldn't have imagined when I first began this journey.
Professional Growth
After graduation I bounced into the business world establishing my own studio and professional photography business. I have successfully photographed over 20 weddings and events, building a strong portfolio and client base.
Before even graduating I had a goal for my business. I wanted to surround my self with like minded professionals who could mentor, work cohesively together and assist in furthering my education and techniques. I joined the Tampa Area Professional Photographers Association (TAPPA) in February of 2024 and was blessed to be asked to be on the board as Director in August when an opening became available. I was feeling so blessed to be given such valuable opportunities that I hopped into every meeting, assisting in everyway possible. This manifested itself through the Print of the Month Competition Committee, and the website committee. In December I was voted to take over the Treasurer position for January 2025. TAPPA has become a second home to me. I truly enjoy the photographers I get to collaborate with and learn from.

Media Recognition
Since graduating I have been featured in two magazines: Canvas Rebel and Voyage Tampa. I am so grateful for these two opportunities where I was able to share my story of creative resilience and adaptability in the photography industry.
Overcoming Challenges
I faced a significant setback when Hurricane Helene hit my home on September 26-27, 2024. My studio was flooded with 5 feet of water and I lost so much valuable equipment and furniture. Through determination and hard work, completed the main studio rebuild by January 2025, with ongoing enhancements continuing to improve the space. I would not have been able to rebuild without the help of my professional equipment insurance, which is included in my membership to the Professional Photographers Association (PPA). I highly encourage every photographer to carry both liability and equipment insurance. PPA has affordable plans for insurance included with membership, making it an invaluable resource.
Professional Development
PPA, The Professional Photographers Association is worth more then just your insurance policy. They have online classes and resources, trainings around the country, and of course the highly anticipated annual convention called Imaging USA. I was able through the grace of god to attend Imaging USA from February 2-4, 2025, expanding my knowledge and networking with industry professionals. To be truly honest, I was awe struck by the convention. I took courses from leading photographers in the industry like Lindsay Adler and Hanson Fong. I was able to put my hands on the newest technology in the industry, including shooting and editing with it! The best part of it was being surrounded by so many like minded, talented professional photographers. I was able to grow my network and collaborate with others.

Current Focus
While maintaining a successful portrait and event business, I'm expanding into nature, wildlife, and underwater photography. My journey into nature and wildlife photography began with local Florida wildlife, capturing the beauty of our diverse ecosystem from the Everglades to the Gulf Coast. This has evolved into a deeper mission of documenting and raising awareness about endangered species and fragile habitats.
The underwater photography aspect adds another dimension to my work. Starting with basic underwater portrait sessions in springs and pools, I've expanded to photographing marine life and coral reefs. This requires specialized equipment and techniques, but the results are truly magical and help showcase the beauty of our underwater world.
Through my photography, I aim to not only create stunning images but also educate viewers about the importance of conservation. I regularly collaborate with local environmental organizations and participate in photography workshops that combine technical instruction with environmental education. This allows me to share both my photography knowledge and my passion for protecting our natural world.
One of Florida's most remarkable native species is the Sherman's Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger shermani), a unique subspecies found primarily in the central and northern regions of the state. These impressive squirrels are significantly larger than common gray squirrels, weighing up to 2.2 pounds and measuring up to 28 inches in length. Their distinctive appearance includes variable coloring from black to gray with white patches on their nose and ears. Sherman's Fox Squirrels prefer open pine forests and spend more time on the ground than other squirrel species. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, these magnificent creatures are listed as a Species of Special Concern in Florida, making them an important subject for wildlife photography and conservation efforts.
